The "Functional Carbon Materials Team" of the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, aims at realizing the localization and industrialization of diamond precision tools and has recently been achieved in CVD (Chemical-Vapor-Deposition) single crystal diamond synthesis. Breakthrough progress. The team began with the design and modification of domestic microwave plasma CVD equipment and developed a high-density, high-stability diamond deposition device. Compared with foreign equipment, the cost is reduced to 30 percent. The team has independently developed the diamond growth process, that is, special treatment of the seed crystals, while strictly controlling the growth parameters during the preparation process. Through the use of this process, mass production of colorless transparent CVD single crystal diamond sheets has been achieved. The deposition rate can reach 70μm/h under the condition of only hydrogen and methane, and 150μm/h after incorporation of nitrogen, which is also a major breakthrough for domestic equipment.
In addition, the team developed an innovative process that controls the edge effect of single crystal diamonds, eliminating the unfavorable factors of edge growth polycrystals and enabling the long-term growth of high-quality, large-size single-crystal diamond chips. Traditional methods require multiple procedures such as cutting, polishing, and growing, and chemical vapor synthesis of 8x8x2 mm3 (2.25 ct) large diamond single crystals is realized. The above-mentioned achievements are being transformed into industrialized production and will provide strong technical support for the development of domestic diamond precision machining tools and even carat-level transparent diamonds and colored diamond jewelry.
