Bischof + Klein, Europe's leading producer of film and laminates, said that the addition of a newly designed tool holder to its granulator not only greatly extends blade life, but also significantly improves particle quality. Nordson will introduce the tool holder design at NPE 2018 (W2525 booth).
Bischof-Klein uses Nordson's BKG® underwater pelletizer to mix pigments and additives on its compounding line for its own filmmaking business. When the company installed Nordson's new BKG® HiCut TM tool holder on two of its granulation lines, the blade life on the tool holder was extended two to three times longer than in the old design, while some materials were used. (especially non-abrasive compounds), the blade usage time is extended from the usual three days to nearly three weeks. In addition, particles produced using the blade exhibit less "tails" (such tails are separated from the particles in the form of powder after they are produced, which may wear or clog equipment and cause waste of the polymer).

Eduard Beifus, who is responsible for the masterbatch regeneration and concentration business at the Bischof + Klein plant in Lengerich, Germany, said: "Because Nordson's new design increases the number of inserts on the tool holder by 50%, we are able to reduce the rotational speed of the tool. At the same time, we maintain our standard high level of throughput. The reduction in drive speed not only reduces blade wear, but also significantly increases the service life."
In an underwater pelletizer, a polymer strip emerges from the form, solidifies during entry into the water, and is then cut into pellets by a blade mounted on the tool holder. The new HiCut design accommodates up to 100% beveled inserts on each tool holder and up to 54% right angle inserts. This can increase throughput or reduce granulator speed, which reduces wear on the stencil and the blade.
Frank Asmuss, global product manager for BKG granulation systems, said: “The blades on the BKG HiCut tool holder have rounded edges and smooth surfaces with countersunk screws. This optimizes flow and reduces swirl, and there is more space between the blades. So the particles don't pile up. For some products, the new design can increase throughput, making it possible to invest in smaller granulators and save costs."
The BKG HiCut design is compatible with all existing granulator systems and the tool holders are available with beveled and right angle inserts.
