British research and development of new lithium-ion battery

According to European media reports, Cambridge University researchers announced the development of a new type of lithium-ion battery, which overcomes many technical difficulties including power, price and cruising range, and is expected to replace the current vehicle-mounted lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-oxygen batteries, also known as lithium-air batteries. Scientists say that its energy density is theoretically 10 times higher than that of lithium-ion batteries currently used in electric vehicles and is close to gasoline energy, which is enough to make an electric vehicle reach several hundred kilometers.

At present, most of electric vehicles use lithium-ion batteries, and sales have been constrained by high prices and insufficient battery life. Take Nissan Leaf as an example, the cruising range is approximately 250 kilometers (150 kilometers).

The researchers said that the cost and weight of batteries used in new batteries are only one-fifth that of lithium-ion batteries, and they will effectively solve the two major problems that restrict the development of electric vehicles.

Unlike other lithium-ion batteries, researchers at the University of Cambridge switched to lithium hydroxide instead of lithium peroxide and used graphene as an electrode. The results obtained were more stable and effective. The researchers estimate that the battery can be charged and discharged more than 2,000 times, and the current charge and discharge efficiency is as high as 93%.

The research leader Claire Gelley, a professor of materials chemistry at the University of Cambridge, said that the project “although it is difficult but it is moving toward a practical battery”.

However, this technology is still in the research and development stage, and it is expected that the actual finished product will be at least 10 years later. Grey said it is too early to expect large-scale production to be used in automobiles because lithium-ion batteries are still unable to stably charge and discharge.

Sectional doors are hinged and they bend in the tracks as the door opens and closes. Many of these doors are counterbalanced with extension springs, also designated "stretch springs," and they have seven characteristics. The length is the measurement of all the coils pressed together. This, along with the inside diameter of the coils and wire size - the thickness of the wire from which the springs are made - determine the stretch, the distance the spring is extended - normally half the door height, and pull, the force the spring pulls when stretched its normal length. The type of ends determine how the ends of the spring are mounted. The initial tension is the percentage of pull needed to separate the coils. This is determined by the pitch with which the springs are wound. On sectional garage door springs this is normally 15 percent. For example a 100 pound pull spring requires 15 pounds of weight to separate the coils; when a door is open the two springs will support 15 pounds of door weight without any stretch.

Most extension springs are made of oil tempered wire. These are normally coated or painted. Some springs are made of galvanized wire.
