Plastic debris provides shelter for marine life

When it comes to plastics and the ocean, people often think of negative aspects, such as pollution of the ocean and the impact on the breeding cycle of turtles and oysters. But everything has two sides, and then we need to reveal how marine plastic waste creates a floating habitat for crabs and protects them through the Pacific Ocean.
As early as 2012, a group of researchers at the University of Florida began a 37-day voyage from California to Hawaii to study the number of “plastic cockroaches” in the ocean and the marine life that lived there. They found that some species of Asian crabs, mites and other small marine organisms were attached to hard plastics as a refuge to escape predators and travel across the Pacific Ocean. After discovering this phenomenon, the University of Florida biologist Mike Gil and his colleagues pulled the boat aside and collected the buoys, toys, and plastic containers that were salvaged, using tools such as scrapers and paint knives. These plastic wastes are made of hibiscus.
They even encountered a refrigerator full of food during the voyage. According to the Plastics Collection Research Center, about 1.5 million tons of floating debris entered the Pacific during the tsunami in Japan in 2011. Gil said that even if we handle plastics correctly, some natural disasters will affect the environment's stacking of marine debris. Initially, the researchers determined that large pieces of smooth plastic debris could help more marine life across the Pacific Ocean, but they later discovered that the number of gooseneck barnacles played a more decisive role in the calculation of biological species. This is because the barnacle's body, including its long stems resembling tropical trees, is very complex in structure and provides a better shelter for marine life.
Therefore, for creatures such as crabs, seeing plastic is a good thing. Just like finding a floating shelter, plastic is not only a pollution to the ocean, it can also provide shelter for marine life.
