HC Plastics News:
Recently, Japanese chemical company Mitsui Chemical officially accelerated the introduction of new automotive materials into the market, which is a polypropylene-infiltrated UD tape. In addition to being lightweight, the UD tape has the advantages of thermoplastic molding and can be used as a structural supplement. Advice from the design stage, in addition to the use of existing UD tapes such as thermosetting resins, and the market share of PP materials with the world's top suppliers.
UD tape: a new material that makes vehicles lighter
Automotive emissions are one of the main culprits for greenhouse gas sources, and they also increase the cost of the environment and manufacturers. By using new materials such as UD belts, vehicles can be made lighter to reduce carbon emissions. However, these fiber ribbons are costly and difficult to mass produce. To solve this problem, five EU-funded partners from the European Union gathered to launch a project called FORTAPE covering the entire industry chain. The project required a wide range of beneficiaries to develop new integrated technologies that make the most efficient use of materials and energy, making UD tapes even better suited for vehicles and aircraft.
The UD tape using PP is easily thermoformed, and can also be formed into a complicated shape. For the first time in an EU initiative, the use of a cost-effective method to produce unidirectional fiber ribbons for the manufacture and reinforcement of parts in cars and aircraft will make the parts lighter and more environmentally friendly. UD tapes can be used to enhance the mechanical properties of plastic parts and can also be used to make structural parts, reinforcement and thermoformed multilayers.
UD tape production focuses on three spindles: UD tape manufacturing, part manufacturing, and process and part modeling. Three different fiber impregnation techniques have been studied internationally to develop innovative processes for the manufacture of UD carbon fiber and glass fiber ribbons to increase fiber content. Using UD belts as window regulators to enhance automation will help meet the cycle and production needs of the automotive industry. At the same time, a window frame manufacturing process using fireproof polyamide UD tape was developed for the aviation industry. The production capacity of electrolytes for lithium ion secondary batteries has been enhanced on the international market, and the integrated molding technology "Prelamtac" for metal and resin, as well as practical techniques for training with small drones and smart phones, are all seeking to enter the automotive field.
Strengthening components to predict the mechanical properties of parts and the manufacturing process are key to the introduction of new materials in the automotive industry. A reduction in materials and energy consumption will reduce manufacturing costs and reduce environmental impact. The technical and economic feasibility of the process has been successfully demonstrated. In order to achieve industrial implementation, new adjustments and optimizations are needed, and the possibility of making innovation mature and marketable will continue to be explored.
