Scientists have developed self-heating clothing materials

On February 7, according to foreign media reports, scientists have developed clothing materials that will not make you feel too hot or too cold. This material can automatically warm up or cool down according to your body temperature. People often encounter a situation in life: putting on a pullover will only become too hot and have to take it off again. But scientists may now solve this problem. Researchers have invented an automatic cooling material that heats up when someone is too cold.

But it can also detect when they are warm enough and release heat to maintain a comfortable temperature.

This kind of clothing is made of ordinary wool already used in sportswear, but coated with a thin layer of conductive metal. Its creator claims that it is much better than existing breathable sportswear, raising the body temperature by 35%, while existing clothing only manages 5%. This material can be washed like a normal pullover.

Professor Min Ouyang of the University of Maryland helped create these materials. He said: "The creative concept of this material is to ensure that people can stay comfortable. If someone feels hot in the office, they don't need to turn on the air conditioner or change clothes. This kind of textile can adjust their body temperature.

It is covered by carbon “nanotubes”, which are one-millionth of human hair. The cloth under the metal can detect if someone is a little hot because their skin is wet with sweat. This causes the fabric fibers to shrink and pull together, creating an electrical charge that removes heat from the body. However, if someone feels a bit cold again, the material will expand and the metal will be pulled in from the outside air to warm it.

It is said that this fabric works almost instantaneously, so before people realize that they are getting hot, their clothes start to cool down immediately. Professor You Ang said: "The human body is a perfect radiator, which can quickly release heat." Throughout history, the only way to adjust the radiator is to take off or put on clothes. But this fabric is a true two-way regulator.

Ray Baughman, a professor of chemistry at the University of Texas who was not involved in the study, said: "This pioneering study provides an exciting new switchable feature for comfortably adjusted clothing."

This fabric has been woven by scientists into a piece of material with a size of nearly 5 square feet (about 0.5 square meters), which will be tested by an American clothing company and will be available in two years.
