Under normal circumstances, sewage treatment plants and car companies will not have any intersection. But in Spain, the water treatment plant Aqualia and SEAT have jointly developed new technologies that can extract sustainable energy from wastewater. The project is called "Life Metha-morphosis" and aims to generate biofuels from treated organic waste and provide power for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, which can reduce vehicle carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%.
The project focuses on biomethane, an emerging biofuel that is currently used in homes, buses, trucks and ships. Like other projects, Life Metha-morphosis uses bacteria to separate solid waste and collect biomethane in a process called anaerobic digestion (AD).
Matthias Rabe, head of research and development at SEAT, said: "Seat's partnership with Aqualia made it one of the first companies in the Spanish automotive industry to use 100% wastewater to extract biomethane. The development of renewable alternative fuels will help improve the quality of the environment in the future, and it will enable the vehicles in the city to last longer. This is one of SEAT's comprehensive strategies."
Both companies also stated that the medium-sized wastewater treatment plant can process 10,000 cubic meters (353,000 cubic feet) of wastewater per day, which can produce 1,000 cubic meters of biomethane. This energy is enough for 150 cars to travel 100 kilometers (62 miles) a day. The automobile manufacturer Seat will follow-up to provide some CNG vehicles to test it, and it needs to reach 120,000 kilometers of driving test mileage.
