Recently, 21 countries, including India, Mexico, Spain and Saudi Arabia, have begun to use the new Global Monitoring System (GMS) of the United Nations Global Postal Union to use RFID technology to track letters and evaluation of postal service quality in different countries.
The first phase of the GMS program covers 530 independent team members from 38 countries from now until December 2009. Team members will distribute 24,000 RFID-tagged test letters distributed via 45 global postal facilities. When a letter passes through a gate equipped with an RFID interrogator, the data is collected and sent to the UPU. The data is then used to determine the success of the service and help the postal operator to increase operational efficiency.
