China has developed the world's largest transmission current of high temperature superconducting cable

At present, the world's largest transmission current of high-temperature superconducting cables has been successfully developed in China, and put into operation in Henan Zhongfu Industrial Co., Ltd. Recently, the superconducting cable demonstration project passed the technical acceptance of the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The newly adopted high-temperature superconducting DC transmission cable was jointly developed by the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Henan Zhongfu Company. It has a length of 360 meters and a current carrying capacity of 10 kA. Researchers revolved around the core technology of large-current, long-distance high-temperature superconducting DC cables and broke through a series of key technologies, forming a series of independent intellectual property rights. For the limited processing length of superconducting cable cryogenic Dewar tube, the ideas and technical solutions of “segment design and plug-in integration” were proposed for the first time. By using the standardized interface and double-jacket vacuum sealing connection technology, any length can be achieved. The connection of superconducting cables laid the foundation for the development of long-distance superconducting cables. This cable is currently the world's largest high-temperature superconducting cable for transmission current, and is also the world's first high-temperature superconducting DC cable that realizes grid-connected demonstration operation.

According to Xiao Liye, head of the research team and director of the Institute of Electrical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, this superconducting cable was put into operation on September 26 last year and has been safely and reliably supplying power to the electrolytic aluminum production line of Henan Zhongfu Company for many months. Compared with the conventional power cable with the same capacity, the energy-saving effect has reached more than 65%.

Experts pointed out that high-temperature superconducting DC cables have significant advantages in terms of large transmission capacity, low loss, small size, and no electromagnetic pollution, and have significant potential for application in future power grids. With the rapid development of renewable energy, high-temperature superconducting cables can be used to realize large-capacity long-distance transmission of renewable energy power. At present, major developed countries in the world are strengthening their technical research and demonstration in HVDC superconducting cables.

It is understood that the development of high-current high-temperature superconducting DC cables is a key project of the National 863 Program for New Materials, and is also an important directional project for the Knowledge Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
