A graduate student at Brown University in the United States recently developed mechanical bat wings to help scientists better understand how bats fly. He said: "The bats are really amazing. Their wings are very dynamic, far beyond the wings of birds and insects." The mechanical wings of the graduate design simulate the shape and movement of the dog bat, which is abundant in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Initial studies of mechanical wings have shown that when a dog bat flaps a wing down in flight, the body rises, but the subsequent upward slap can counteract this lift, while folding the wings during flight reduces drag.
