According to reports, the Munich Zoo in Germany recently discovered a good way of energy self-sufficiency. Special equipment used by zoo staff can transform elephant manure into biogas, and then use biogas to generate electricity, so that waste is fully utilized and energy-saving and environmentally friendly.
In the Munich Zoo, there are three huge containers, each capable of holding 100 cubic meters of animal excrement. These containers can hold all the feces produced by a vegetarian animal in the zoo during the week. Then inject warm water into the container. The bacteria will decompose the feces and ferment for 30 days in an oxygen-free environment. Biogas is then produced in these vessels, mainly methane and carbon dioxide. These gases flow through a ceiling vent to a large balloon and then supply an air-driven generator to generate electricity.
Dominik Forster, head of the zoo, said that this large balloon was modelled on a zeppelin and can store enough biogas to meet 5% of zoo energy needs. Foster said: "When the biogas is converted into electricity, the heat it generates can also be stored for heating the gorillas." These calories are enough for 25 households.
After the biogas is discharged, the remaining solid components can produce the organic fertilizer required by the crop, and the crop can then become animal feed. Forster said that there is no waste at the zoo. The Munich Zoo is the only zoo in Germany that uses animal waste to generate electricity and heat.
It is reported that an adult elephant eats 100 kilograms of fruits, vegetables and pretzels every day and produces a large amount of feces. The animals in this zoo add up to almost 2,000 tons of excrement per year. The electricity generated by these excreta is sufficient for 100 families in Munich.
