1. General performance: PS is colorless and transparent pellets. It emits thick smoke and has turpentine smell when burned. It can be blown out to draw filaments. The product is hard like glass. When it falls or beats, it will emit a metal-like sound, so it is It is called "sounding glue"; it can break but can't bend. When it breaks, it shows the silver color of the clam shell. The water absorption of PS is 0.05%, slightly larger than PE, but has little effect on the strength and dimensional stability of the product.
2. Optical performance: good transparency is the biggest feature of PS, its light transmittance can reach 88~92%, and it is the best transparent plastic variety like PC and PMMa, collectively referred to as three transparent plastics. The refractive index of PS is 1.59~1.60, but due to the presence of benzene ring, its birefringence is large, which cannot be used in high-grade optical instruments.
3. Mechanical properties: PS is hard and brittle, has no elongation, and stretches to the vicinity of the yield point and breaks. The tensile strength and flexural strength of PS are the highest in general-purpose plastics, and the tensile strength can reach 60 MPa; however, the impact strength is small and it is difficult to use as engineering plastics. PS has poor wear resistance and is generally resistant to creep. The mechanical properties of PS are greatly affected by temperature.
4. Thermal performance: The heat resistance of PS is not good, the heat distortion temperature is only 70~90 °C, and it can only be used in the range of 60~80 °C for a long time. The low temperature resistance of PS is also not good, and the embrittlement temperature is -30 °C. The thermal conductivity of PS is low, generally 0.04~0.13W/(mK); the coefficient of linear expansion is large, generally (6~8)×10-5 K-1, which is very different from metal, so the product is not conducive to metal. 5. Electrical properties: PS has excellent electrical insulation and is not affected by temperature and humidity; dielectric loss tangent is small, can withstand proper corona discharge; good arc resistance, suitable for high-frequency insulation materials.
6. Environmental performance: PS has good chemical stability, can resist general acids, alkalis, salts, mineral oils and lower alcohols. It can be attacked by many hydrocarbons, ketones, higher fatty acids, etc., and is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons (such as benzene, Toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, etc.), chlorinated hydrocarbons (such as carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, dichloromethane, chlorobenzene, etc.) and esters. PS has poor weather resistance, poor light resistance and oxidizing properties, and is not suitable for long-term outdoor use; however, PS has good radiation resistance.
