Researchers develop mini-thin-film solar cells for mobile devices

Can you imagine that one day your smart phone screen is a mini solar panel? With the researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), developing a new double-layer transparent thin-film solar cell, this vision will soon be realized.

The research team led by Yang Yang of the School of Applied Science and Engineering at UCLA Henry Samueli has developed a tandem-structured transparent organic solar cell (TOPV) last year that achieved about 4% solar conversion efficiency.

Today, they have nearly doubled the conversion efficiency of the thin-film battery (7.3%), making it not only applicable to mobile devices, but also to windows, automotive sunroofs, and other large-scale surfaces. Yang Yang pointed out that the advantage of this technology lies in its potential to transform large areas of skyscrapers, such as windows and walls, into energy harvesting equipment. "Compared with the current practice of installing solar panels on rooftops, the technology is applicable to more Multi-faceted area."

UCLA researchers have already improved the conversion efficiency of PV cells by 2 times last year. The PV cell can be made transparent, light green or brown to meet the needs of building windows, smart phone screens, automotive sunroofs and other surfaces, and can be converted to energy harvesting equipment. The reason why such a double-layered ultra-thin polymer battery is more efficient is that, first, it can absorb more light from a broader solar spectrum, and secondly, the interconnect layer of polydiiodide salt between cells can be reduced. Loss of energy absorbed.

Yang Yang's research team developed new polymer materials for batteries that can produce two low-gap material combinations in two different colors, PBDTT-SeDPP and PBDTT-FDPP-C12, making it suitable for use on windows to increase stability. Sex and beauty. "These materials can be handled in light brown or light green, not only to keep people in the window private, but also to match the color of different buildings, and also to collect a large number of light sources."

The use of new solar films on mobile phones will not only hinder the use of batteries, and even "enough to prolong the service life of batteries," Yang Yang stressed. However, the screen of a smart phone is usually not large enough to absorb enough solar energy to fully charge the device. Therefore, when applied to the windows of a building, once connected to the building's power system, the solar film is more conducive to providing sufficient power for the building's facilities.

Yang Yang and his development team have published the research results on the Energy & Environmental Science journal website. The team is currently working to improve the efficiency of components such as transparent solar films and to make the thin-film battery expandable.

One of the sponsors of the study, EFL Tech, expects the solar thin-film battery research to be commercially available in the next five years. In addition, the United States Air Force Academy of Sciences and the Naval Research Office also sponsored the study. (Compilation: Susan Hong)
