The iron and steel industry in Taiwan Province of China was established under the condition of lack of coal and less iron, and vigorously developed the shipbreaking industry. In the 1960s, Taiwan used the dismantled old ship plates to produce and restructure steel, and used scrap steel to produce electric furnace steel. In the 1970s, Taiwan's annual shipbreaking volume accounted for more than 60% of the world's total shipbreaking capacity, and the annual shipbreaking capacity reached 2 million tons. In order to further meet the needs of Taiwan's production and development of the island, the Taiwan authorities decided to build a large steel plant with an annual output of 6 million tons of steel in Kaohsiung, and named it China Steel Corporation. The iron ore, coking coal and main raw fuel of the plant are all imported through Kaohsiung Dagang. Taiwan Province produced an annual steel output of 2.998 million tons in 1990.
