NASA Tom Marshburn is currently upgrading the "urine disposal system" for "waste and sanitation components" on the International Space Station. A new technology can convert astronauts’ urine into pure water and electricity
Beijing April 15 news, according to the United States, "Discovery" magazine website reported that there is a classic saying that the astronauts can be processed into drinkable water after urine. Nowadays, a new type of bioreactor can also use the filtered waste to convert it into electricity.
On long-haul space flights, once the drinking water is exhausted, astronauts will be able to use specialized equipment to treat urine and turn it back into drinking water. However, the filtered waste will still be discarded. But now, scientists from the University of Puerto Rico, Eduardo Nicolau and Carlos R. Cabrera, have collaborated with the NASA Ames Research Center to find a new kind of Use these waste methods.
First, they used a method called forward osmosis to hydrolyze urea. These urea can be converted to ammonia using a biocatalytic reactor. Afterwards, these obtained ammonia gases are then electrochemically oxidized to obtain electron and nitrogen molecules.
Although there have been previous attempts to make urine bioreactors, the general goal is not to convert urine into a fuel cell or electricity. The core idea of this design is to achieve these two goals at the same time, namely to remove urea from urine and turn these human wastes into valuable resources.
According to a summary report by Nikolai and his colleagues at the American Chemical Society (ACS), the device can remove as much as 80% of the biogenic carbon from the urine and convert about 86% of the urea into ammonia.
According to the notification in the ACS press release, the device will play an important role in space travel, and it will also have a wide range of uses on the earth as long as there is no need for disposal of wastes such as those with large amounts of urine. Regionally, it can play a role. (morning)
