Since March of this year, staff of Shenzhen Huanggang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau have successively seized three batches of corn seeds at the Futian Port with a total weight of 8.8 kg. Upon examination, it was found that the surface of these corn seeds was coated with red powder for preparation of sowing, and both were packaged in "Rugao Jujube" packaging bags in an attempt to evade inspections by inspection and quarantine departments. After investigation, the parties stated that the batch of corn seeds was brought back from abroad by the owner and the origin was unknown. The staff members will intercept and destroy the corn seeds according to law and send them to the laboratory for inspection. The test results showed that the three batches of maize seeds contained genetically modified components. This is the first time that Futian Port has detected genetically modified components from corn seeds.
All along, the advantages and disadvantages of genetically modified crops have been the subject of controversy in the scientific and public spheres. The “Golden Corn†incident in Hunan in 2013 was caused by the smuggling of water passengers carrying foreign seeds and planting in many provinces, while Huaihua Channel County sown the “Trojan horse†seeds without inspection and quarantine, causing serious losses. The invasion of alien genetically modified corn seeds will most likely cause China's food security and even the high risk of national security. Huanggang Inspection and Quarantine Bureau will strengthen port inspections and strictly control the country.
